Hospice Care of California supports life-long health care education and advocacy. People who understand their own health, their personal values, and the medical system in their community are better able to take control of their medical care. Both in seasons of good health and illness, each of us can consider the following issues and become more empowered as health care consumers.

Consider your health. The American Academy of Family Physicians provides helpful information on a wide range of topics. Use the link below to access general information about nutrition, mental health, addiction, injury prevention, exercise, vaccines, and other issues that affect you and your family.

Consider your values. Not everyone has the same hopes and expectations regarding medical care. Take some time to clarify your values, perhaps by answering some of the following questions.

  • What do you see when you imagine a healthy, happy life?
  • Are you satisfied with your relationship with your primary medical provider? Do you feel comfortable bringing up questions or concerns?
  • Do you have preferences related to traditional medicine, holistic treatments, or avoiding medical intervention altogether?
  • What is your definition of successful aging?
  • Is there anything that prevents you from living the healthy life that you want?
  • Who would you want to help make decisions for you if you were unable?

Communicate with others. Talking with those you love about your health and your values for medical care is an important next step. Families and friends can join together to eat well, exercise, and make other healthy lifestyle choices. Loved ones are often key advocates in times of illness, as well. No matter your age or health status, it is important to clearly communicate your health care wishes to those closest to you. The “5 Wishes” document is easy to create and allows you to share your wishes with others. The form is free to download, and you do not need a lawyer to complete it.
